The annual YRI “POWER THROUGH READING” Program is a community-wide book drive that was created to provide Pre-K through 8th grade level  books to organizations with pre-existing reading programs who serve our area’s at-risk youth.  This month-long book drive occurs during June of each year and  partners with the New Orleans Public Library system, national book publishers and the general community.  To date, the YRI “POWER THROUGH READING” Program has collected and donated over 25,000 age appropriate books to local reading programs.

June 1, 2014: The Youth Rescue Initiative (YRI) launches the 7th annual “POWER THROUGH READING” book drive.  Greater New Orleanians and others around the country are encouraged, during the month of June, to donate new or gently-used age appropriate books for pre-K through middle school children which can be dropped off at your neighborhood New Orleans Public Library branch or mailed to the YRI office: P.O. BOX 24873 New Orleans, LA 70184.  The books collected will be donated to local youth-serving pre-existing reading programs.  Since its 2008 inception, the YRI “POWER THROUGH READING” program has collected and distributed over 25,000 books to reading programs to help Greater New Orleans disenfranchised youth gain the appreciation of the ability to read.
